Surprised by his own reaction to the terribly executed withdrawal from Afghanistan, Rick Uliano and his son, also a veteran, decided to reach out to fellow veterans to see how they were doing. Responses varied; but most often the replies were that folks were caught off guard by the depth of their emotions, even after being out of the military for years.
Often times we do not get to see positive, honest or vulnerable ways to deal these situations that seem bigger than ourselves. When Rick and I spoke I was impressed by how his family came together in honest support to work through the unknown. We wanted to capture an honest conversation about this confusion, to let people know they are not alone, to share strategies for friends and family to understand how to provide support, while encouraging others to reach out.
With 44 years of combined military experience, Rick and Deirdre have an appreciation of the hearts and sacrifices made by the men and women who have served as well as of those who support them.
We are transitioning into a time to heal. All of us have an ability to enhance each other’s lives. If one person is positively impacted by this conversation it is worth it. I have been blessed to know Rick for key stages in my life. I know the wisdom, leadership, and honest conversation will touch the hearts of many. With love.
